A fluttering skirt weaves restraint
Stubbornly defying the rhythm of the waves
A self-important performance
Once I thought those lines were so graceful
Yet forgot I was never a queen
Not a perfect form within the blue
Merely a strand of seaweed, ever entangled
In the capricious waves
At least beneath the inescapable sea
Clownfish thanked me for my shelter
Spotted seals murmured their goodnights
Green turtles guarded the hope of new life
Now I only wish to shed this dusty label
To grumble, to resist, or to soften like smoke
Overlapping shadows marked the moment of fulfilment
I only wish that each assassination by the tide
Would silently clasp every grain of sand
A fleeting instant, yet an eternity
Silent depths grow of their own accord
