Anonymous: Physics Teacher

Me: Sir, as a physics teacher, when did you first develop an appreciation for poetry? And why did you choose physics?

Teacher: I suppose my love for poetry began in secondary school. It was more of a hobby, influenced by poetry from throughout history and across cultures. I found poetry to be direct, powerful, and deeply emotional. Choosing physics was a different kind of appreciation—an appreciation for the beauty of reason and logic. Moreover, physics itself originates from our real world; it merely provides an objective and robust perspective for understanding it.

Me: Sir, how do you perceive the connection between poetry and physics?

Teacher: I believe it boils down to beauty. One embodies the beauty of the senses, the other the beauty of reason.
Poetic quality itself is an adjective, after all. The inherent beauty within the mysterious material world is profoundly poetic. Personally, when appreciating the beauty in both, I find it necessary to step back and view them through an aesthetic lens. Beauty is universal; poetry and physics are merely pathways.
Formally, since physics enables us to deconstruct the material world, it naturally cultivates broader erudition, thereby enriching one’s grasp of poetry’s intricacies. When my mind dwells on poetic matters, I contemplate poetry; when it turns to physics, it contemplates physics.
